My Friend, The Martian
Presented at the Five Towns College 72-Hour Film Festival, 2018
Accolades: Best Sound Design, Best Editing, Best Cinematography
Step into college orientation freshman year. You know absolutely no one, and everyone around you seems to have made their small circles already. Maybe you always considered yourself a social butterfly, but for some reason this moment in time makes you feel more like a turtle. But you take a deep breath and step toward the small circle that looks relatively welcoming, and ten years later, you sit next to them in the apartment you still share after five years and two moves. You stand beside them as they profess their love to their significant other in front of no less than 100 people. You make memories with them that feel like they’ve already lasted a lifetime when the lifetime has just begun.
All it took was one step. For Charlie’s friend, The Martian, that step was actually several million.
Conceived during a 72-hour Film Festival and inspired by my own nerve-wracking transfer to a new college, My Friend, The Martian explored what it means to step outside your comfort zone and make everlasting bonds with people you might least expect.
